WHEN YOU PRAY Consider pausing before you do anything this morning and pray. You might consider using a model to help you pray. A good model is the ACTS model. What models have you used? What are your favorite ways to pray? A = ADORATION. This is a time where you praise God. You tell him what he already knows, but you still tell him because He loves to hear it from you. When you acknowledge who he is and what he has done, you find yourself in a very humble position. It prepares your heart as you reflect on His greatness. It reminds you of His never-ending presence in your life. You, Father God, are the Creator of everything that exists, you are sovereign, you are all-knowing, you are all-powerful, you are merciful, you are forgiving, you are the alpha and omega … etc. Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with timbrel and dancing, praise him with the strings and pipe, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Psalm 150:1-6 C = CONFESSION. This is a time of cleansing. Again, it is a time to acknowledge what God already knows about your sin. He knows what you did, what you did not do and what you are thinking about doing. He knows before you know. There is nothing like confession to cleanse and restore your heart. As you reflect on areas that you did not represent Him, you must repent, turn away from those areas, and turn back to God. Not a day later or week later, but as soon as you become aware of your sin. After you acknowledge that you have sinned, you must confess to God who loves you and made a way for you to be right with Him through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. If you repented, then you do not own your sin any longer. Your sin does not define you. God has forgiven you, so you should accept His forgiveness. You might have to suffer the consequences of your sin, but you will be free from the shame and guilt that cripples you. Pause, be still and reflect on your thoughts, your heart, your behaviors, your words, your actions, and your inactions. It does not matter when they occurred. It could have been a minute ago, an hour ago or a day, week, month or year ago. Call out your sin and name it. Nothing cleanses you more than truth. If you told a half truth, then you lied, which makes you a liar or deceiver. If you are angry with someone, then you are carrying hate in your heart. Start by thinking about yesterday. Did you represent God in every situation? Did you bring glory to Him, or did you steal His glory? Speak truth. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 T = THANKSGIVING. This is a time for you to give thanks. Thank God for everything good and for everything not so good. You can always find some good in everything you are experiencing or going through. Look for the good. A good place to start is with your relationship with him, with your spouse, with your family, with your friends, with your co-workers, for your job, for sufficient income, for success, for failure, for your repentance, for your lessons, for your weaknesses, for activities or events that expose your short-comings, for your grandkids, for your gifts and skills, for your temperament, for your patience, for your medical diagnosis, for your service to others, for everything, etc. You will never be able to complete an exhaustive list of what to be thankful for daily. Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 S = SUPPLICATIONS. Supplications or requests may not seem as important by the time you get here, but God wants you to share them now that your heart has been prepared. He already knows what you need but ask Him and then believe that He can and that He will if it is in accordance with His purposes and His will. It is not a wish list; it is a request that only God can fulfill directly or indirectly through others. Your requests are about your life. They are about other people’s lives. They are the here and now and they are also the future of many other things. The second-best time to plant a tree is today, the best time was thirty years ago. That is how prayer works. There is no better time to pray than today. The time is now. Then believe. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 LET’S PRAY As you pray today and reflect on who He is and what He has done, allow your heart and mind to be cleansed through repentance and confession, then give Him thanks for every little detail in your life, and finally, align your prayers with His purposes and will and then hang on as you see God reveal Himself in every area of your life. Let’s represent Him and He will represent us. Let’s bring God the glory in all we do. Start your day with prayer and believing! Tom O’Keefe tomokeefe.org 405-409-4998

BE A NOBODY!
I recently came across this poem again. It was my father-in-law Stan's favorite. It reminded him to stay humble. To put other's first. To not think too highly of one's self, but to elevate others. When you talked with him, he always talked about you and never about himself. If you tried to redirect the conversation back to him, he would kindly and lovingly change the topic. He never believed it should be about him. Very wise man. That is probably what attracted so many people to him. It reminds me of one of my favorite Bible characters, John the Baptist. His purpose was to go tell and prepare the world about the coming Messiah. John 3:30 says, "He must become greater; I must become less." What a concept! His whole ministry was to point others to Jesus. What if every day we woke up and decided to elevate others in the same way; they become more and we become less. Read through the poem. If you want a deeper understanding of the poem, see below for an explanation of the meaning. Let's be a nobody together! TGBTG! Tom DON’T STOP PRAYING Prayer is not a one and done thing. It’s not a cleansing, a washing, a get out of jail free card, a last chance, a desperation cry, or a settling that nothing else worked - so might as well try prayer. Prayer is communication with the only one that can actually do anything or change anything. Prayer is a conversation with God. An intimate personal conversation. He knows you and loves you. He feels every joy and every pain as you are experiencing it. He is with you always. Prayer is trusting that you are being heard, not necessarily that he is going to answer the way you ask. He knows best. He is gracious and merciful. He ALWAYS provides what you need, not necessarily what you want. He will always answer with a yes, a no, a not yet, or maybe a not that way; but this way. Are you listening? He will always answer but sometimes we have to look and see to understand how he has answered and sometimes we have to wait while he does a work in us before he reveals his answer. This one verse on prayer is pretty straight forward and pretty simple to understand yet, too often we stop. Why? I suspect it is tied to trust and belief. - Do I really believe God heard my prayer? - Do I really believe he can do anything about my situation? - Do I really believe he cares about me? - Can he really hear and remember every prayer every day? - Does he actually have the power and authority over everything? I say, yes, he heard you; he cares about you; he knows every thought before you do; and he rules over all of his creation. Pray and believe that he and only he can answer your prayer. Here are six different versions of the same verse. They have a common theme - keep praying. Don’t stop. He’s listening and he’s responding. Can you hear him? Are you listening? Are you seeing? Are you experiencing him? Don’t stop praying. Praying to the one and only one who can, will change your life. I pray in Jesus’s name, that at least one person that is reading this who has given up on prayer, will turn back to praying. May they trust and believe that God hears them and will answer them according to his grace and mercy. “pray continually,” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NIV “Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT “pray without ceasing,” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NASB2020 “be unceasing and persistent in prayer;” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 AMP “Make your life a prayer.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 TPT “Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 NLT RESCUE ME May I suggest that we are focusing on the wrong thing. Our focus should be on our calling. I know as a Christian, I believe that God uses our witness to draw others to Him. He uses our witness to bring glory to Himself. Yet, we allow the world to steal our witness. What if the person we are fighting with, arguing with, or creating division with doesn’t know Jesus? Will any of that help? Listen to this song as a prayer. Ask yourself, how is God using you to complete His plan of rescuing your family member, your friend, your neighbor, and your coworker? He is using you everywhere: face-to-face, phone or video calls, text messages and by what you say or don’t say on social media. Our ability to focus on our calling will cause us to love everybody. That’s right - everybody. Even people who don’t agree with us or who attack us or who believe something different than us or those who judge us or those who offend us. The only response you should have is to love them. It is the only logical and BIBLICAL response. By doing so, you leave the door open to witness to them. Try using no words and witnessing to those around you. If they can’t see and feel your love, you may be promoting or may be focused on the wrong thing. At the end of everyday, we should ask ourselves if our witness caused anybody to CONSIDER Jesus? If not, why not? What were we focused on? It obviously wasn’t our calling because our heart can’t hate and love at the same time. Use your influence to build the kingdom one interaction at a time - NO MATTER the media. This world is not our home. We should not act like it is - better yet, we ought to believe God knows what’s going on in this world and is using it to build His forever kingdom in Heaven. You get to be part of that! We are all called to restraint, because without it, love will not prevail. Not everything we think or feel should be expressed; but it should be surrendered to God in prayer. Promote love and allow your witness to cause those you have influence over to CONSIDER Jesus. There is no better focus or purpose in this temporary world. Yay God. TGBTG! FIRST RESPONDER
Imagine if our first response was always the same as Charlie Brown’s first response. Imagine if our first thoughts, words, actions and posts were in response to Jesus’s first response to us. We all love First Responders for the sacrifice they make and Jesus’s sacrifice is no exception. He offered salvation to the whole world - and that includes me and you. His sacrifice certainly qualifies Him to “be love” and to “be loved”. “Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34 NIV My trust is in Jesus and not the things of this world. All the things that I have gotten so comfortable with - that owned my time, my heart, my devotion - just don’t seem as important. Makes a person stop and turn back to fundamentals. Makes us realize we are not in control of this world. Makes us realize that even if and when humans discover a vaccine by God’s wisdom, for this disease, there could be and likely will be, another one. Our dependence on this world has got to cease.
As a banker, my mind goes to liquidity. How much liquidity is enough to sustain my family or my business - for a month, three months, six months, a year ... will it ever be enough? Should we be even better stewards to help those who aren’t? Should we store up more liquidity just for them? As a banker, my mind goes to debt. How much debt can my family or any business support in a downturn? Should I even have debt? Should I be leveraging my assets so I can have more or bigger stuff? Should I only incur debt if it is short term or self-liquidating and is income producing? As a believer, my mind goes to good stewardship. Practicing stewardship with my time, my talents and my resources allows me to help others when the time arises. It allows me to be at peace. It frees me up from dependence on this world and allows or reminds me to be dependent upon the Lord Jesus. How about you? Do you want to be free from the things of this world and from the fear of loss? Then seek a relationship with Jesus. Ask him to give you peace right where you are - don’t wait for the storm to blow over or to capture enough wealth or enough stuff - turn to him now and forever. Then, in the midst of the storm, you will walk hand in hand with Jesus. You will be at a place of perfect peace. I shared this in my text devotional ministry the other day, but after hearing from others throughout the day and after watching the chaos being distilled by “all” media, it seems it might be beneficial to others as well. At a time like this, it seems like a great opportunity to be thankful and to praise the Lord as we bring “EVERYTHING” to the Lord in prayer. Pray these lyrics and worship as you listen to the song by clicking this link - What a friend we have in Jesus! WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS LYRICS! What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms He'll take and shield you; you will find a solace there. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer. Soon in glory bright unclouded there will be no need for prayer Rapture, praise and endless worship will be our sweet portion there. TGBTG! Tom O’Keefe 405-409-4998 BEST RESOLUTION - EVER! Keep God First! Psalm 96 below seems to set the right tone for a new year in 2020. Keep God first! As we all set goals, we are reminded of just how easy it is to make them and break them. Only eight percent of all goals set will be accomplished. We have to execute. We have to have the right attitude. We have to demonstrate discipline. We have to see and feel the value and see the benefit of our goals or like any other well intended and maybe haphazard resolution, we fail. We simply don't see them through. Keeping God first is different. It is not something to be accomplished. It's a relationship! We walk with him daily in all things. Reading His word, talking to him in prayer, and sharing His message to His people. When we do these things, our relationship deepens. I am drawn into the things that please him, what about you? He wants us to be healthy, be fit, be good stewards, be productive, be kind, be generous, be good employees, be good parents, be good citizens, etc. He wants us to be our best and if we are going to be all these things and more; we must “be in relationship” with our living and loving almighty God. Keep God First! All other things will be added to you as you walk in relationship with Him. TGBTG! Tell everyone every day how wonderful he is. Give them the good news of our great Savior. Take the message of his glory and miracles to every nation. Tell them about all the amazing things he has done. Let the skies sing for joy! Let the earth join in the chorus. Let oceans thunder and fields echo this ecstatic praise until every swaying tree of every forest joins in, lifting up their songs of joyous praise to him! Go ahead—sing your new song to the Lord! Let everyone in every language sing him a new song. For the Lord’s greatness is beyond description and he deserves all the praise that comes to him. He is our King-God and it’s right to be in holy awe of him. Other gods are absolutely worthless. For the Lord God is Creator-God, who spread the splendor of the skies! Breathtaking brilliance and awe-inspiring majesty radiate from his shining presence. His stunning beauty overwhelms all who come before him. Surrender to the Lord Yahweh, all you nations and peoples. Surrender to him all your pride and strength. Confess that Jehovah alone deserves all the glory and honor. Bring an offering and come celebrate in his courts. Come worship the Lord God wearing the splendor of holiness. Let everyone wait in wonder as they tremble in awe before him. Tell the nations plainly that Yahweh rules over all! He is doing a great job, and nothing will disrupt him, for he treats everyone fair and square.” I DON’T KNOW WHY GOD …
Family and friends, I humbly say to you that I don’t know why God healed my cancer. It is extremely difficult to answer the question, “Why did God heal you, but not my ________?” To which I say, I don’t know. I have literally had this question asked of me on multiple occasions. Some people are hurting so bad that they are unintentionally carrying some bitterness, not towards me, but sometimes I am the recipient of it. When I see it or experience it, my heart craters for them. I wish I had the right words or the right explanation, but I don’t. I have even gone silent about God’s healing in my life, but God is challenging me to stop doing that. Today he introduced me to a lady at MD Anderson. She has been going to MD Anderson since 1995. She has had at least six different kinds of cancer. I asked her to share her thoughts with me. She said, it is simple, I start every day with “STP”. - S for surrender. She doesn’t blame God. She said, “He didn’t give me cancer.” - T for thanksgiving. She has a heart of gratitude for every day she is alive, for her husband that battles with her and her family that has changed their lives to accommodate her; but still include her. - P for praise. That’s right, she gives God praise every day. She knows who he is, and he knows what she is going through, but he is using her for a greater good. Her only response is to praise him. She mentioned that everybody is struggling with something - some with cancer, some with other diseases, some with loneliness, some with broken relationships, some with addictions, some with homelessness, some with the loss of a loved one - she went on to say, “but what do any of these things have to do with our relationship with God?” Today, I returned for my quarterly checkup. In a lot of ways, I hate to tell anybody, including my family that I am going because it creates fear in them. I don’t like when they suffer. I was telling my boss that I don’t always want to tell them so I can protect them. He kindly told me or better yet, I interpreted, that withholding from my wife or my children or my family isn’t protecting them, it is being selfish. He also inferred that I need to let them walk the journey with me. Never once did I think I was being selfish, but I now understand how that I was, even though it wasn't on purpose. Withholding isn’t loving them. I immediately told them I was returning today. Those that reached out to me, seemed grateful. There were some mixed emotions, but I got to be there for them, and I got to listen to them. I didn’t withhold! I didn’t quasi-protect them. I listened. I felt what they felt. I experienced what they said and didn't say. Today, I received another good report. Yay God! My original tumor was found, treated and eradicated in 2017. The second tumor that taunted us in 2018 was declared gone in the spring of 2019. They wanted to do a biopsy and surgery in July of 2018. I took it to God in prayer. He told me and I quote, “Do nothing until I do something”. So, I informed MD Anderson that I was going to wait on God. Needless to say, that was not the popular vote. Over the next three scans, it stopped being hot and it kept on shrinking with each scan. The doctors did not understand it. I got to tell them how I waited on God. In April 2019, MD Anderson declared me healed. They put me on a survivor study. That was at two years and that simply never happens. My naso-pharyngeal cancer was gone! For the first time in the history of visiting MD Anderson, they had me fill out multiple faith-based pages that effectively asked how much do I believe my faith contributed to my healing. Today, my scan was still clear, I contribute everything to my faith and God's ability to use the wisdom of doctors. A funny thing happened with the nurse who was taking my vitals. She went through the normal protocol and questions. When she was done, she said, “What are you doing here? There is nothing wrong with you.” Here’s the thing, I can’t explain why God receives some home to be witnesses for him and why he leaves some behind as witnesses to his power and glory, but every time I get to share this, God gets the glory here on earth. Just maybe by me sharing this testimony one more person comes to Christ, maybe one more person overcomes an addiction, or just maybe, one more person doesn’t blame God. Whatever you are going through, turn to God. Pray. Ask. Believe. However, if he doesn’t answer the way you want or based on what you understand, keep on given God the glory or use the new acronym I learned today: STP - Surrender - Thanksgiving - Praise God loves us and I believe He does everything according to His mercy. He does things we can’t understand. Either way, He will use our lives if we will let Him. Our lack of understanding and our pain doesn’t change who He is and what He wants to do through us. Much love! Message me how I can pray for you and with you. Houston, I am signing off for now and going home to see my family and friends. God when you are done with me on this earth, I look forward to seeing you in heaven. TGBTG! Tom www.tomokeefe.org A BETTER WAY!
Here is a little gem from Proverbs 24:10 I read today. “If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength!” The key word is, “If”. That means we have a choice. We don’t have to falter. Then why do we? I suspect in times of trouble that we are all guilty in some way of going it alone or seeking the world’s attention or basting in our own misery, but there is a better way! I find my strength is increased when I turn to the Lord, when I am comforted by the faithful and when I reject the well intend, but unharnessed fear and anxiety of others. When Jeremiah questioned God because of the troubles he faced, God asked him how he ever expected to face big challenges if the little ones tired him out. See Jeremiah 12 for the full context. Who are we to say if the challenge we are going through is a big one or little one? God will use it to grow us, grow others and prepare us for even bigger things. Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” "While I'm Waiting" by John Waller I’m waiting I’m waiting on You, Lord And I am hopeful I’m waiting on You, Lord Though it is painful But patiently, I will wait, I will move ahead, bold and confident Taking every step in obedience While I’m waiting I will serve You While I’m waiting I will worship While I’m waiting I will not faint I’ll be running the race Even while I waitI’m waiting I’m waiting on You, Lord And I am peaceful I’m waiting on You, Lord Though it’s not easy But faithfully, I will wait Yes, I will wait I will serve You while I’m waiting I will worship while I’m waiting I will serve You while I’m waiting I will worship while I’m waiting I will serve You while I’m waiting I will worship while I’m waiting on You, Lord Click the link and let the song soothe your soul: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb7TSGptd3Y&sns=em I return to MD Anderson today for another PET scan and to meet with a Neurosurgeon. The good folks at MDA have been tracking what they are calling a "dark spot" since they declared me cancer free a year ago. They do not know what it is and have attempted to make educated guesses with no success. One doctor literally told us that he had never seen anything like it. How is that possible? These folks deal with this everyday - for them not to know is mind boggling. I suspect more for them than for us. I guess that simply proves that God is in control and has not given them the wisdom to know yet. The "dark spot" is located in the same area my cancer was located. It is located in my clivus area, carotid canal and along the underside of my skull. The tests leading up to our meeting today continue to show that the cancer is still gone. The purpose of today's meeting is to meet with the neurosurgeon so that he can weigh the risk of doing nothing to doing surgery. In there mind, if it isn't supposed to be there and it is growing, they should remove it. In my mind, I should wait on God to make that determination. God has taken me to a place of peace and assurance. He has convinced me that he wants me to wait on Him. So, I am. How am I doing that? By living in the now. My family has been helping a long time friend with some general maintenance around her home. She texted me one day and said it was too hot and that I don't have time. My response to her was simple and straight forward and as it turns out is somewhat profound. I told her that I have "nothing but time". Think about, that's all any of us have to offer. Whether that is one minute, one hour, one day, one year, one task, one act of love … it all comes down to one thing, time. We all have time. What we choose to do with it is up to us. As I wait on God, I get to serve Him. How cool is that? TGBTG! Tom Have you ever stopped and asked yourself the question, "What is worship?"
Worship is appreciating God for his nature and worth. Worship is being in the presence of God. We worship Him to know Him better and that starts with being present. Being present sounds simple, but how often does your mind drift, an activity pop up or someone needs something from you? How often do we stop worshipping to handle the thing that interrupted our worship? What if it didn't have to be that way? Like many of you, I have allowed too many distractions to interrupt my worship. It doesn't need to be that way. We can worship before, during and after our godly interruption. What if we were in the state of worship all the time? What if we viewed the world the way God views the world and intended for us to view the world? So, what does the "state of worship mean? It means to "be present" and "stay present" with God all the time. Like me, you probably studied a long time ago that worship was the primary focus of many Israelites. For many, this was what they did daily. Everything they did centered around serving in the house of the Lord. Worship should occupy the core of our lives. Many of us attend church on a regular basis and even attend some type of mid-week activity, but is that what "the core of our lives" is talking about? I don't think so! The core of our lives is lived out daily and in every thought, word and action. We are called to be in a state of worship at all times no matter how good something is or how bad something is - we should worship none stop. In order to do that, we need to seek and be in the state of worship all the time. We need to be aware of it when we wake, when we go to work or school, when we serve or when we tend to our families or other personal relationships. All the time! We can worship at all times if we will stay present with God and be aware of His presence in us. He will guide us and tend to us at all hours just as we are to be present with Him at all hours. We need to build our entire life around worshipping God rather than making worship just another activity in a busy schedule. What is keeping you from being present and worshipping God at all times? I just named mine, so, won't you take a moment and pray the prayer below and then from this day forward, seek to be present and to worship him as you go through your day. Don't let the distractions of this world prevent you from putting or keeping God first above all. Prayer: Father God, whatever each of us just named, please take it away or help us to put you above it. Help us to pursue you by reading your word, by praying and by serving others. Please let our distractions become opportunities to glorify you in the process. TGBTG, Tom HE IS SOVEREIGN
Healing for me is about believing. It is about knowing the promises of God and then believing them. I believe He can and will heal every ailment according to His purpose. He can and will chase down every cancer cell, every ailment, every ache and pain and take them under His control. We need to give it up as God is in the house. No worries, no fretting, and no holding back. Get all-in and be all-in on believing. So what are we to do while we wait on that healing? We are to glorify God in the midst of our cancer, our illness, our pain and our suffering. We are NOT to waste this opportunity to glorify God by turning into ourselves, but rather we need to turn out to others. What will they see from us? What do they see from us? Is my response sufficient, is it right and does it bring glory to our almighty God? Is it pointing to Jesus or is it pointing to me? Is my suffering glorifying God? If you are caught up in some ailment, turn it over - give it up - let go of it - it is not yours. Free yourself, while you wait for healing and His mercy to be revealed. God will use you if you let Him. Who knows how He will use you or how He will heal you or when He will heal you, but know this; He will be glorified before you and before the world as you point to Him. While you pray, while you wait in expectation and while you believe for a miraculous healing - ask God to show you how to trust Him more and to increase your faith more. Ask Him to use your suffering to draw you closer to Him - to draw others closer to Him. He loves us - this I know! Amen! TGBTG! Tom Isaiah 41:10 ESV says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." HIDING FROM GOD God said, “Let’s make man in our image.” Of all the things He has created, only man (all people), were created in God’s own image. So, if you are made in His own image, you must ask the question, “Why would you want to try to hide from God?” Who can hide from God? No one! Where are you going to try to hide from the presence of God? You may block Him out of your mind for a moment, but you can’t hide from God. Where “would you” or “do you” go to try to hide from God? Maybe you answered, “I don’t hide from God.” If that is the case, let’s take an inventory. Think about and write down your personal vices that are inconsistent with God’s Word, make a list of what you say, and more importantly, what you think, that can’t be found in scripture and consider what you watch or read and ask yourself if you would invite God to join you? Maybe your hiding places are subtler and aren’t quite as obvious. Maybe you hide behind your prestige and self-importance; your talent; your success; your money; your pride, your insecurity, your looks; or maybe even an addictive substance, such as alcohol, legal or illegal drugs, sugar, or people you hang or run with. If you are trying to hide from God, it is a feeble effort. You don’t want to hide or be distant from God. Nobody does! When there is danger, where do you want God - close to you, with you, and inside you. Oddly, when you want to sin, you want to do the opposite and block Him out of your mind, but that’s too late, He has always existed and is always present. You can’t escape, hide, or block out a Holy God that loves you. He loves you so much, He sent His Son, Jesus, to die to take away the penalty of your sin. He sent His Son because He loves you, He wants a relationship with you, and wants to save you. There seems to be no excuse for sinning against God and pretending He doesn’t exist or isn’t present. There is no hiding from a God that loves you. He allows you to live free of the fear of the penalty of your sin. All you must do is truly accept Jesus into your heart and you will be freed from the agony of the future without Him. Maybe you say, “I’m not into the Bible.” Well, it is better if you get into it soon. Knowing God, is to love God! That’s when you will be set free. That’s when you will pursue Him. That’s when you will embrace the fact that you were created in the image of God and that you can live according to His ways and His qualities. Qualities that are of God. Qualities you share with Him. Here are three of the qualities you received from God, yet many try to block them out. You received your personality, your morality, and your spirituality from a God that loves you. God defined your qualities, not you; you are created in His image. You can’t change that. If you don’t believe it, look in the mirror and look into your heart - who do you see? The image of God! Maybe some of you can clearly see Him in you. Maybe some of you can’t. Look deeper, He is there. He wants to come to the forefront of your life. Don’t be afraid to embrace the fact that He is in you. Let Him out. Let Him become the center of your life. Let’s all measure our qualities against those God has imparted to each of us. Let’s accept His personality as our own, let’s live moral lives according to His standard in Scripture and nowhere else, and let’s intentionally get to know Him by spending time in His word daily. TGBTG! Tom Genesis 1:26-31 - Parts redacted from Dr. Charles Stanley with InTouch.org on Lessons Learned in the Garden of Eden PREPARE THE WAY
2,000 years later and we have the same mission – “to prepare the way”. Now how is that for a mission statement. Pretty clear and concise. It leaves no doubt as to what we are to do. Mark 1:2-5 NIV “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” — “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.” OUR RESPONSE Should our response be any different? What if our place to follow is right where we are? What if he calls us away to another place, will we go? Both Simon and his brother Andrew became great fishers-of-men – why? Because, they acted out of obedience. They responded immediately. They didn’t wait for confirmation, they didn’t wait until they saved up enough money, they didn’t wait until they were better educated, they didn’t wait until they read the whole Bible, they didn’t wait until the time was right and they didn’t wait until they knew the future. They simply dropped their nets and followed him. Hopefully, you have or will drop your nets right where you are and as a result, “are preparing the way” with the people God has entrusted to you. Mark 1:18 NIV “At once they left their nets and followed him.” GOOD NEWS TRAVELS FAST Are you sharing the good news or keeping it to yourself? I find it interesting that Jesus strongly told the Leper not to tell anyone, but he did just the opposite. Jesus wanted him to keep it to himself, so he could continue to fly under the radar as he preached, but the Leper told everyone. Jesus wanted him to just give God the glory through his offerings and his testimony, but he couldn’t hold back from sharing the good news. I am sure, we would be the same way. Good news is hard to contain. Can you imagine if every Christian told one person the good news today, how fast it would be spread? It would be unstoppable. Mark 1:28 NIV “News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.” PRAYER If Jesus started his day with prayer, shouldn’t we? In fact, he started, “very” early in the morning. What is “very early” for you? I suspect it is different for everyone, but I believe the point is that we should pray before we do anything else. Otherwise, who will we get our direction and guidance from? How we know what is off God and what is of self? I also like the fact that he prayed in solitude, meaning, he did not announce that he was going to pray, and he didn’t make a public spectacle of himself, he just went to be alone with the Father and commune. How much more should we do the same. Mark 1:35 NIV “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” TGBTG, Tom TGBTG! All of Lane’s scans were clear. This news overwhelms our hearts and brings tears of joy! Please join us as we fall to our knees and give prayers of thanksgiving for the Lord’s mercy on Lane. It is truly a gift and a miracle! Thank you for your prayers! Your prayers have been answered and you have proven to be powerful prayer warriors! IN GOD'S MERCY! I returned to Houston Saturday night for my first follow up appointment since being declared cancer free on July 5th. I completed my labs and 3D MRI yesterday morning and will meet with various doctors today. My belief is that the doctors will reconfirm what God has already done - that is, he brought glory to himself when he healed me. However, I don’t believe that my healing was the full extent of his glory. I believe those who became believers for the first time, those who saw their faith increase exponentially and those who walked in faith with me the entire time, brought far more glory to God than my trial ever did or could. Many have asked me why God healed me and not their parent, child, spouse or friend. The truth is, I don’t know why, and I don’t think any of us will know while we are on this side of eternity. My belief is that God answers all prayers in his mercy and according to his purposes. His mercy begins with our greatest need - the need to be forgiven of our sins. He offered us all forgiveness through Jesus his son. It’s ours to receive. He heals our soul when we believe. Then he directs his mercy to each of our situations and our trials. If we believe that God Loves us, it is easy to see him offering us mercy. What is sometimes difficult to see or understand for most of us, is how God answers our prayers. I believe that no matter what our prayer is, he provides us the solution that will further his kingdom and bring him the most glory. When we agree with his answer to our prayer, our faith deepens and grows like wildfire, as does the fire inside all those around us. So, for me, I trusted God from the beginning and God doesn’t contradict himself, so I continue to believe with all my heart, mind and soul that God took my cancer away. I have no doubt. I am calling on you to join me. Let’s lift our faith and give God all the glory. Where do you need to trust God? Love you all very much! TGBTG, Tom Someone, Not Something
The deeply biblical idea of vocation presents a radical break from the privatization of our modern world and a revolutionary expansion of most Christian’s thinking about the nature of their lives. Our tendency is to compartmentalize, with our spiritual life over here and our jobs over there. Yes, we struggle with how to live for Christ in the marketplace in terms of survival and sometimes ethics, but to see the job itself as a sacred act of worship is often beyond our spiritual vision. As Henri Nouwen confessed at the beginning of his stay at a Trappist monastery, “Most people think that you go to the monastery to pray. Well, I prayed more this week than before but also discovered that I have not learned yet how to make the work of my hands into a prayer.” But this is precisely what the idea of vocation challenges us to pursue. Why is this idea so alien, even to the Christian? Arguably, it is because we not only have tended to privatize our lives, but in the area of vocation we have secularized them. Think of how we use the term itself. We talk of “vocational education” and “vocational counseling,” which means little more than job training and job placement. The heart of our calling, however, is not to something, but to Someone. The idea behind calling is that whatever our occupation may be, it is to be elevated to an expression of worship – that which could be pleasing to God – if performed with excellence and integrity and heartfelt devotion. A real estate agent, then, as a committed servant is to represent his or her clients to the greater glory of God. A software developer’s labor is to be infused with a sense of piety. But this is rare. “Doctors practice medicine not primarily to relieve suffering, but to make a living,” noted Dorothy Sayers. “Lawyers accept briefs not because they have a passion for justice, but because the law is the profession that enables them to live.” More often than not, we have reduced being a Christian doctor or a Christian lawyer to what is done outside of office in some form of “official” ministry setting. The fallacy of this, notes Sayers, is that we view work not as the “expression of man’s creative energy in the service of society, but only something he does in order to obtain money and leisure.” It doesn’t help that when we first charted our vocational course in life, the notion of calling was seldom used as a compass. For many, the trek began with choosing a major in college. Rather than evaluating gifts and abilities, position or responsibility, submitting the matter to prayer and consideration, we were opportunistically pragmatic. What teachers did we like? Where could we get accepted? Where were the best job opportunities? What would pay the most? This is the map most of us follow our entire life. It’s not that we tried to go against the natural grain of our life, much less dismiss the voice of God, we just didn’t think of God speaking to us about such things. Yet if the root of vocation is “calling,” then we must listen. When I became a Christ follower at the age of 20, I was a pre-med major in college. I wanted to be a doctor because it paid well and seemed reasonably well-respected. There was no sense whatsoever of it being a life God had called me to pursue. But with my new life in Christ came a new sense of purpose. I wanted nothing more than to live the life that would make the most impact for Him. If it was in medicine, fine, but if not, all the better. As I evaluated medicine through the lens of my newfound faith, it became clear that there was little to commend it. I was competent in science but had scant passion for medical matters. And unlike what I had seen God give others who had been called to this field, nothing in my spirit sparked a vision for how it could play into the wider scheme of things. But I knew what did. I knew what I could do; should do; was made to do. Communicate. Amazingly, this simple, basic understanding of who I was, and who God had made me to be, had never factored into my thinking about vocation. The most profound vocational question is not, “What should I do with my life?” Instead, it is the more foundational (and demanding) question, “Who am I?” Many years ago the film Chariots of Fire captured the public’s imagination and the year’s Oscar for best picture with its story of Eric Liddell, the 1930s Olympic runner from Scotland. In the film Liddell’s sister questions him about why he is going to run in the Olympics instead of pursuing another career. In reply, he turns to his sister and says, “Jenny, God made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.” God made each of us a certain way and when we run that course, we feel pleasure – God’s and ours. Fredrick Buechner’s definition rings true: “[Vocation is] the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” And make no mistake… the world’s deep hunger needs your deep gladness. That’s why God gave it to you. James Emery White Sources Adapted from James Emery White, Serious Times (InterVarsity Press). Henri J. M. Nouwen, The Genesee Diary. Os Guinnness, The Call. Dorothy L. Follow Dr. White on twitter @JamesEmeryWhite On July 5th, my wife and I received amazing news. News that changed our lives. We were told that I was cancer free. Praise God! TGBTG! MY REFLECTIONS As I reflected on that news over the last ten days, my outlook on life seemed different. Everything I did seemed to have new meaning and new purpose. My response changed. I realized, "I get to ...". MY LISTS Like many of you, I would make a list every week and then seek to knock it out at all costs. I would figure out what I needed to get done, who I needed to call to help me and how long it would take – so I could move on to the next task. My approach has changed. I still make the same list, but I look at it from a different perspective. I look at it and say to myself, “I get to do such and such and I get to do it with so and so”. MY NATURE I found that my natural “getter done at all costs” personality and my “drive it until it is complete” nature had shifted. I found myself being more docile, more agreeable, and less argumentative. I found that I was being kinder and friendlier. I was seeking common ground. Mutual help. I found myself seeking harmony and reconciliation above all. I was complaining less about things and about people. The standard I was holding people to was high, very high. I backed off my self-imposed standard to meet them where they were and to see how I could help. Why, because it still gets done and life is short, very short. Life is too short not to have relationship be more important than task. MY PASSION I didn’t lose my passion. Several times this week, I had to hold my tongue, eat my words, or change my thoughts so that I didn’t allow my passion to turn to pride and destroy a relationship. I had to slow down and allow for buy in, to allow for understanding and to allow for growth. I had to realize that my way wasn’t the only way. I had to humble myself. I still desire to achieve at high levels, but I lost my desire to do it at the cost of a relationship. Relationships come first. People are important. They are the most important thing. MY RESPONSE My response is simple, “I get to …”. Not just that “I get to … but that, “I get to love”, first. This is not a new idea to me, as I love people. However, as I reflect back, I didn’t always lead with love. I would get things out of order and sometimes I would forget that I am dealing with people and people deserve love first, above all. HIS RESPONSE We are called to “lead with love” just as our father in Heaven did. Jesus laid down his life out of love. He died on the cross just so we don’t have to suffer in Hell for eternity. He made a way for us to live in love forever. His sacrifice is evidence of His love for all of us. YOUR RESPONSE My prayer for you, if you want to join me, is to remember to love first. Jesus’s example of sacrificial love is the highest form of love one can give. As you go throughout your day, I hope you will remember that “you get to lead with love”, too. People matter. Let’s get the word out. No excuses, no guarded responses, and no politically correct phrases … speak the truth in love and remember that “you get to” change lives one at a time forever. MEMORY VERSES John 3:16 “For God so loved the world (us), that He gave his one and only son (Jesus), that whoever believes in Him shall not perish (live in Hell eternally), but have eternal life (live in Heaven eternally).” John 3:35-36 “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” TGBTG! I love you all and can’t wait until our paths cross again and “we get to love” together. Tom O’Keefe Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. DEDICATED Today's blog, like the ones before it, are all dedicated to the Lord. It has always been about Him and it should always be about Him. Without Jesus, we are nothing. It is dedicated to the hundreds, if not thousands, of prayer warriors that faithfully prayed day in and day out and never gave up or stopped believing. You brought our spoken and unspoken requests before the Lord. It is dedicated to all those who quietly worked behind the scenes to assist us physically, emotionally and financially. You were consistent, persistent and relentless. You served and served and served without ceasing and did it from your heart. It is dedicated to my wife, to my children, to our families and to our friends who quietly and lovingly stood by us. You walked with us step-by-step, as we trusted God with the details. You were always present and somehow knew when we felt alone. You just showed up in cards, emails, texts, social media, phone calls, airplanes, care packages and casual in person visits. Your subtle presence brought us great comfort and built up our faith. You were a continuous voice of faith, of reason and of assurance. They were all so necessary. TRIALS To me, my trial with cancer is just another trial - it is no different from the trials many of you are going through. My trial is called cancer. Your trial may be called something else. Whatever your trial is, you get to decide to go it alone or turn it over to the Lord and watch in awe what He does with it. My experience is that he will use it:
Why does he use trials? Because He loves you. Because He loves those that don’t know Him and He uses you to reach them. He loved us so much that He died so that we could live. Like many of you, I wasn't fully prepared on the front end to be used by God, but as I submitted to the reality of my cancer, I understood and believed that God would use my trial for the greater good. My family and I were simply the recipients of God's love in action through His created people. Your love poured out on us is proof of His existence. HISTORY To give you a little background, they completed a pre-treatment 3D MRI that revealed the level and amount of cancer and they completed a post treatment test just before we left Houston so they could know if the radiation and chemo were working as planned. At that time, the doctor was very pleased with the progress between the pre and post treatment tests, but to be transparent, Stephanie and I were a bit disappointed that it was only marginally smaller. The doctor assured us that the treatment was working. However, he hedged and said for us not to be surprised that when we came back for our eight-week 3D MRI test results that it could still show cancer. This was discouraging to hear, but I politely responded with, "Dr. Fuller, I appreciate what you are saying, but I believe with all my heart that God will have taken it all away by then". To which he replied, "I just want you to be prepared. Most patients come back for their eight-week test expecting the cancer to be gone and it isn't. We are looking for progress and that the cancer is continuing to reduce. We will then have you come back at 12 weeks and compare again. The radiation treatment continues to work after the treatment is finished". I told him I understood, but that I believe it will be gone at eight weeks. We politely agreed to disagree. BELIEF I had believed all along that my cancer would be cured by my eight-week test. Many of you have whole-heartedly believed with me. Many told me to trust the doctors with the results as they have thousands of cases of experience. While I appreciated that perspective, I could not go there - my trust was in God alone. Many of you have lived through experiences that may lead you to believe otherwise. I have lived through some as well, but this was a time that there was no room for me to hedge my faith with prior experiences. You see, the details of the tumor, which I have not shared openly, were that I had a large inoperable tumor located in my nasal pharynx, which sat at the end of my left Eustachian tube. In the two months leading up to the start of my treatment, the cancer had spread across the soft pallet of my upper mouth to the right side of my nasal pharynx and it had grown within two centimeters of my brainstem. The risk was that it would grow into my brainstem. RESULTS Yesterday, my wife Stephanie and I flew down to Houston to meet with Dr. Fuller, our Radiation Oncologist, for the long awaited eight-week test result. The doctor would reveal the results of the eight-week 3D MRI at this appointment. Stephanie and I were at peace as we had turned it all over to God for results from the very beginning. The results revealed: NO CANCER - GONE - NONE Thank you for everything you have done for us. Words don't cover it. We now get to move to the post treatment follow up schedule. We love each and every one of you with our whole heart. Thank you for loving us back. TGBTG, Tom, Stephanie, Heather, Ryan, Jarrod, Jennifer and Joshua BIBLE VERSES OF FAITH Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Mark 9:23 - "'If you can? said Jesus. "Everything is possible for one who believes." Mark 11:23 - Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. BLESSED! - Blog written by Steph The weekend is here and we go home soon. I am overcome with so many emotions as I reflect on this journey and anticipate our return home. I’m finding myself a bit anxious about leaving Houston and returning to reality. God provided the ultimate environment for Tom and I to walk hand in hand through this journey together. I am looking forward though to the next few months of continuing to care for him at home. This has been surprisingly easy on me. All I have had to do is accompany Tom for treatment / appointments and take care of him. No other responsibilities. Who can leave their home and family and not have a single concern? Only those of us whom God has blessed with wonderful friends and family. While my emotional side missed the kids, family, friends, (Honey) and life events, I never had to think about anything but Tom. I hated seeing him suffer, but my complete faith in his healing, gave me such a peace. This journey has opened my eyes to see what is truly important in life. First and foremost, our relationship with our Lord and Savior! The love, peace, strength, and confidence He gives us is ALL we need for anything we endure. To God be the Glory that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength. We have the promise of eternity, so we have nothing to fear of this world. Our biggest concern should be – who doesn’t know the Lord and how can our lives lead them to their Savior! This is our purpose and our goal as we finish the race God has placed before us. The second thing that I have learned that is truly important in life is the love of our family and friends. God has blessed us abundantly with such amazing people in our lives. My heart is overflowing with love and gratitude for how blessed we are to have so much love in our lives. We lack for nothing. My only prayer is that I can return this incredible love to others as they have loved us. My ultimate desire as we return to our normal lives is to show everyone how much I dearly love them and what they mean to me. LIVE, LOVE, and LAUGH! The third important thing that I want to intentionally focus on is to live life to its fullest. Unfortunately, with my extreme OCD, I spend so much time on details, that I miss out on life. This experience has shown me how important life is and how we need to live each moment in the present. This truly will be something that I will have to work on. Relaxing does not come naturally to me. My desire is to make more time for my husband, my children, my sisters, my mom, my family and my friends, and enjoy every moment. I want to look back on my life and say that I spent every minute loving and enjoying the people God placed in my life. My relationship with Tom will be at the top of my list! After 33 years of marriage and 4 children, we have traveled many roads, mountains, and valleys. He is the most important thing to me, and I want to spend the rest of my life showing him how much I love him. This, also, will require intentionally putting aside time for him. Ultimately, I will be blessed by every moment with him. After being alone during this time, my romantic heart wants to move to a secluded home on the ocean and never return, but reality is I would miss everyone. We are so very blessed with a love that is FOREVER! Then, with Tom at my side, I want to spend every available minute with family and friends, savoring each and every moment! No regrets. I would have to say that the most impactful part of this experience has been meeting our precious friend, Lane. He captured a piece of our heart the very minute we saw him. We will always love him. He is a 9-year-old boy who has been fighting his cancer for 3 years. He has an old soul that loves John Wayne movies, horses, rodeos, and hunting. The first day that we met him, we left the hospital thinking – “how can we complain or be weak when that little boy can fight so hard”. We were blessed to see him every day at radiation. He was a true nugget of God’s love for us. I brought him a little surprise each day just to experience the joy of seeing a smile on his face. Tom’s last day of radiation was Thursday, but we made a trip to the hospital on Friday to celebrate Lanes last day. He will still have to finish out his chemotherapy treatments, but he is done with the brutal radiation. I found myself crying that morning at the thought of saying goodbye to him. Then, I fell apart when he arrived in a hospital bed. He had been admitted to the hospital the day before with low blood counts and a fever. He was receiving blood, on oxygen, getting many antibiotics and needing morphine. He looked so little and so fragile. It broke my heart to see him that way. We had our little gift and a balloon for him, but I would have sold everything I have if I could have made him smile at that moment. When his radiation was over, they wheeled his hospital bed over to the celebration bell. When they asked him if he wanted to ring the bell, with his eyes closed, he said, “I want Mr. Tom to do it for me.” How can a heart explode anymore with love? This will do it. I cried all day. My heart is breaking to leave here and not be a part of his life. His mother promised that we would keep in touch. I invited them to come see us in Oklahoma and told her we would love to have Lane any time. When we return for our follow up appointments, I look forward to seeing his precious face again. Please, please pray for a complete healing of Lane so that he can live an amazing life. What is important in my life? - God
- Children - Family - Friends I am going to spend every moment, of every day, living my life to the fullest and focusing on these important relationships. My prayer is that I show my love for others. In Christ’s Love, Steph YOU ARE PART OF A MIRACLE
Hello family and friends in Christ, Many have asked what the next steps are after I finish treatment on Thursday, April 20, 2017. This is what I know so far, they will have completed the maximum number of radiation (33) and chemo (6) treatments they can safely apply in order to a eradicate my cancer. So now, please join me in giving God all praise and glory for his miracle of healing. Truly, please get on your knees with me and give Him thanks. In my mind and in my heart, it is finished. Our God is an awesome God. I came here to be part of a miracle and I believe that I was. I also believed the entire time, that every single prayer warrior on this journey with me, was part of my miracle as well. That being said, MD Anderson is not done. The first two weeks following treatment, I will spend my time managing through post-treatment side-affects, as they occur. In early May, I will return home to finish my recovery. We originally intended to stay in Houston for the month of May, but in order to save a month of rent and also to hurry up and get home to see our kiddos, we have elected to recover at home. This is a very tricky time. I need to avoid anybody or anything that could expose me to sickness or infections that my immune system isn't prepared to battle. I need to focus on rebuilding my immune system to fight for me. They indicated that I need to be on the guard for 2-4 weeks. Basically, they want me to stay on high alert through the end of May. I don't know what that looks like today, but I will share more as I learn about it. In late June, MD Anderson would like us to return for a final assessment wrap up. Whenever this is scheduled, it will take 2-3 days. Two weeks after the final assessment, they will coordinate with us for a final consultation meeting with the care team. We project that to be mid-July. Normally, waiting would be a cause for anxiety or fear, but in this case, we all need to remember that we are part of a miracle and we get to finish where we started ... on our knees giving God the glory. I pray that each of you will turn to God and keep your eyes on Him and not on the things of this world. Remember, Peter walked on water and walked towards Jesus, until he turned His eyes on the storm and then sank. Jesus in his compassion saved Peter even though he doubted. To turn your eyes on anxiety or fear now is the same as turning your eyes towards the storm - you do not want to do that as it may just reveal that you have been praying and hedging your faith with an element of doubt. There is no need to do that as you are already part of the miracle. We are walking on water with Jesus. I am thankful for each of you and for continuing to walk this journey with me. You are so faithful. You are Prayer Warriors! I am especially thankful for my wife and all she does for me and is doing for me. I could not have done this without her by my side in every way. The doctors praised her each time they saw how well the battle was going. They were surprised each and every week. They shouldn't have been - have you met my wife, Stephanie? She is amazing! Of course I am most thankful for Jesus and how he owns my heart. He is everything and He is the only thing any of us needs. As I mentioned previously, it is all up to you to invite Him into your heart, like I did. If you haven't, now is the time. Don't wait. I love each and every one of you and give great thanks for all that you have done to share Christ and to support our family to date on this journey. Now let's continue to be walk on water kind of believers! TGBTG, Tom O'Keefe tomokeefe.org<http://tomokeefe.org> WHAT IS THE ONLY THING YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF? Merriam-Webster defines “control” as having the power to influence or direct people’s behavior. Over the years, I have been fortunate to coach, teach, manage, and lead others to success, but never once did I think I was in control, but I knew who was. I remember coaching a U16 all girl soccer team and somehow thinking I was in control of the practices – after all, I was the coach. Not! I held a player meeting and simply asked them, “What do I need to do to get you to practice hard and not goof off?” One of the girls spoke up and simply said, we need time to talk to each other. Being a dumb male coach, I said, “What do you mean?” Once they explained it in terms I could understand, I changed the practice to accommodate them. Our practices went like this: 6:00 Arrive 6:05 Talk time 6:10 Warm up 6:25 Talk time 6:30 Training 6:45 Talk time 6:50 Scrimmage 7:05 Talk time 7:10 Scrimmage 7:25 Talk time 7:30 Coaches update To get the best out of my players, I needed to learn from them and give up control. I needed them to tell me how to help them be successful. Have you ever considered the possibility that “control” is simply an illusion and does not exist? Maybe, we are looking in the wrong place? Take a moment and scroll down to read ALL the scriptures posted below. They will declare who is in control in every aspect of life. Let them speak to you about who He is and how He is with you all the days of your life. “What is the only thing you are in control of?” What you believe! You and only you, get to make that decision. It is the only decision that has eternal significance and it is up to you. What do you believe? I have met and interacted with people from all walks of life while on this journey and like most communities, faith or a lack thereof can be categorized into three bullets:
LET’S PRAY Romans 10:9-10, 13 remind us, “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified (declared not guilty), and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved (promised eternal life).” “… for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” If you are reading this blog, I am praying for you. I am praying for your faith to increase, or I am praying for you to accept Jesus into your heart or I am praying for your relationship to be restored. I love ya and Jesus loves you more! Psalm 31:14-15 ESV / But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors! My boss, Stan, asked me today how I was doing? It seemed like a simple enough question, but not one that I focus on much. I view it much like a foot race and I am a little more than half way through. My focus is one day and one week at a time. Anyway, I wanted to just share it openly with the rest of my faithful "Prayer Warriors". Treatment is going great with my side-affects staying somewhat controlled. The docs think I am doing better than expected. Last Monday they told me the honeymoon was over and that it starts to get worse from here on out. First of all, I have never thought of it as a honeymoon, but to their point, the side-affects have worsened, but are under control. I learn something new every week that I couldn't have known the week before. As an example, when they say the treatment is cumulative and progressive, they mean the side-affects are cumulative and progressive. They don't mean the treatments are ... the treatments are immediate. In other words, if they radiate today, I get the full impact of it today, but need to go again tomorrow to get another dose. Same with the chemo, if I get it on Monday, it begins working immediately and lasts about five days. Then its time for another bag of chemo. I did have a bit of a slump mentally following the 3D MRI. While they were incredibly pleased, I had expected more - which I had no reason to expect more, but I did. It bothered me for about a week. Since that time, I am back on top of the world. I am so thankful for this treatment, I have a better understanding of what we are doing to eradicate it and how it works. I am thankful for all those who have reached out to us and I give God praise that he is allowing me to walk this walk in faith. Quite honestly, I don't know how I would do it with out it. I have seen a lot in just five weeks, but I have learned that disease, such as cancer, does not discriminate. It attacks young, old, male, female, black, red, white, yellow, Christians, non-Christians ... you name it. I have also learned, people deal with it differently. Some are mad, sad, frustrated, ready to quit, etc. I just find myself faithful. I would say there are more here relying on their faith, than not. I believe the patients may have more faith than the doctors, not all, but some. Interestingly, I have learned what the limitations of the doctors are and that no matter what the treatment is, they can only go so far. The rest, as one-doctor told me, is beyond them. So, I keep following the protocol and doing what I am told to do. My wife is enjoying that, I think. She can't accuse me of not listening. She is very persistent. Hopefully, it will pay off and I won't be fighting the side-affects like those who don't do what they are supposed to do. The only real challenge I have right now is that I have no taste or smell, so I have no desire to eat. I have to eat because my body is consuming calories at an alarming rate. If I sit sedentary and don't do anything, I use about 3,000 calories, which isn't enough to keep me from losing weight. I also have to make sure there are 130-150 proteins per day included in my calories so that I can grow new cells and repair the ones that are getting torn apart. Trust me when I tell you, it is hard to eat 3,000+ calories per day and 150 protein when they all taste like cardboard. As a little aside, before coming to Houston, I decided to put on a few extra pounds since I was going to lose some weight while I am here. I was successful and gained 14 extra pounds, but I have now lost all of it plus four more. My goal is to stay at this level and not lose anymore. I can't or they will stop treatment or put a feeding tube in me. That's not going to happen. Happy cardboard munching away! One unique side-affect is after I receive chemo on Monday, I have hiccup like spasms for 1-2 days, which makes it somewhat difficult to carry on a conversation. Normally, on Tuesdays, I have them from sun up to sun set, with Wednesday trailing off. I am thankful for all the homemade recipe recommendations on how to cure hiccups. They were creative, but I just can't stand on my head, drink a cup of water and eat a spoonful of peanut butter at the same time - so I took a pill to help stop the spasms. Seems to work better. Just for fun, here is my latest attempt at a poem / rhyme. I like to write something to motivate me each Monday as I kick off another week. Resting in His arms! Rest my child and don't say a word, daddy is revealing a miracle, I heard. Trust in me and let it be, as many will see and turn to me. You are free, you are free falling. As you fall give God your all, He will catch you in His arms as you reach out and call. TGBTG! Your friend forever, Tom O'Keefe tomokeefe.org PRAYER REQUESTS
CONQUERED This verse gives me great comfort and assurance to know that Jesus has already conquered the world (disharmony) and has gone ahead and prepared a place for us. A place of perfect harmony and no illness. A place where all of our loved ones who believed in Jesus, are there now without suffering and fully healed. NOW THAT MAKES ME HAPPY! If you don't know Jesus, I pray that you will consider Him and His saving grace. If you are ready, pray this prayer out loud. "Dear Jesus, I need you. I need you in my life. I am a sinner. I need a Savior. I need a Lord over my life. I need you. I accept you into my heart and ask you to save me. I believe you died on the cross to take away my sins, you overcame death once and for all, you were raised into heaven and you are seated at the right hand of God. I put all of my faith and trust in you. You have been given all power and authority, in Jesus's name." Amen If you prayed that prayer for the first time or to rededicate your life to Jesus; I am here for you. If you want to talk or you have questions, just call, text or private messenger me. The time is now! Don't wait another minute. TGBTG, Love ya, Tom Follow us at: tomokeefe.org LIVING WITH ENTHUSIASM Let’s talk about enthusiasm today! We all know what it looks like and we all seem to want it, but where is it derived from? Why do some people have it and others don’t? Let’s start with a story about Adrian. ADRIAN Every Monday I have blood drawn and tested. This week a bubbly young and petite nurse, named Adrian, came to get me. As we were walking down the hall, she was singing and dancing – bopping left and right. I would have done it with her, but as most people know, I have no rhythm. She was so enthusiastic that it was encouraging to me. I complimented her and told her that I loved her spirit. I asked her why she was singing and dancing? She told me that she does it for the patients because the patients have a lot going on and I get just a moment to encourage them. I was upbeat and she asked me why? I said, what do you mean? She said that most patients are down or dreading the day. After all, it was chemo Monday! I said, well, I’m not because Jesus loves me. I have cancer, and that doesn’t change anything about who I am. I asked her if she had ever been through a difficult time where she had to choose how she was going to respond? She said, “Yes, I am doing it right now, I lost my 14-year-old daughter one year ago; she just stopped breathing.” My heart sank. (conjecture: conversation leads me to believe she took her own life). I was stunned at her answer. Every ounce of compassion flowed through me and caused me to stand to hug her - and she gave back a two-arm bone crushing hug. I began to pray aloud over her. We stood for a few seconds in silence. She then briskly said, I need to draw your blood. As she drew my blood, we talked and we cried and we laughed and we cried some more! My heart was destroyed at that moment for this young mother. I asked her how she has worked through it. She said, “Like you, I get to choose how I respond. I choose to live with enthusiasm. I have great joy in knowing my daughter is in heaven and that she is healed.” We hugged again and she sang and danced me to the exit. Please pray for Adrian. Adrian’s story leads us to the conclusion that “enthusiasm drives purpose”. As an example, every Monday, I start off with a little ditty to remind me of my purpose. The first part is what I do, the remainder is the why. High ho, high ho, it's off to chemo I go; God is rad and I'm so glad; He uses man to complete His plan; Give God the glory, so man will know His story; High ho, high ho, high ho. This little ditty gets me to focus on my treatment, yet it’s my purpose that matters more. While my purpose of being here is to get healed, it is not my primary purpose. Clearly, God has a greater calling than that! I believe, His purpose or calling is to increase my faith and increase the faith of all those who are walking with me on this journey. That includes, my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my co-workers, my prayer warriors, the doctors, the technicians, the people in the waiting area, the valet attendants … and if you are reading this … especially, YOU! What good would it do to be healed and keep it to myself? None! There are thousands, if not millions, of patients that come through MD Anderson that get healed. It is a premier facility. The stories of how people have been healed here are unending. There is no question that God uses doctors and medicine to heal us. Everyone needs to know that and it is on us to tell them. My dear friend, Tim Pedersen, called me while I was riding back from KC, after spending some time with my daughter, and effectively, he told me that I was going to MD Anderson. He then followed up Monday morning to make sure I put in a referral request. When the word gets out that people are healed at MD Anderson, there is no way to keep it to yourself. What good is it to have faith and keep it to myself? It would be useless! Matthew 28:18-20 clearly states our purpose. It is commonly referred to as the “Great Commission”. Commission is defined as, an instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people. So, who is that? It is every believer. It’s me and it’s you. In fact, these verses leave little doubt as to what we are supposed to do. Matthew 28:18-20, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”” Matthew 28:16-20 NIV Jesus declares his authority! If you are like me, my first response might be something like this, “Are you talking to me?” He continues with “therefore”, as if the only logical response is to do what he says. He tells us to “go” and “make disciples”. How do we go? We go to work, we go to the grocery store, we go to school, we go to church, we go to our neighborhood HOA meeting – we go where ever our day takes us. Where we go is not our purpose, it is our opportunity. Your “go” may be exactly where you are right now. The second question is, how do we make disciples? A disciple is much more than a good student or a good learner. A true disciple is a follower. A follower adheres completely to the teachings of another. Discipleship requires a totally committed life. Sacrifice is expected. A disciple is someone who has placed their faith in Jesus. So, back to the question, how do we make disciples? It starts by being one and then our life will become a witness to others. What is your life witnessing today? Worldly things or things of Jesus? We are to be bold in our witness and we are to show those who don’t know Christ the way. The challenge for many is that they believe the sacrifice is just too great – but I would argue the cost is even greater. Luke 14:33, “Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple”. Matthew 16:24, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”. John 6:66, “From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him”. The word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek word en theos. En is the Greek word for the English word “in.” Theos is the Greek word for “God.” So en theos means to be “in God.” When you get in God, you will be enthusiastic. It’s the kind of enthusiasm that isn’t affected by the economy or the weather or your circumstances. It’s eternal because you are tied to the eternal God. You are in Christ. Rick Warren Enthusiasm is derived from a relationship with Jesus. It’s that simple! You cannot get it from anywhere else. As you go and make disciples, I want you think about Colossians 3:23-24. Everything we do is an opportunity to live out our purpose. Put God first in all you do and your life will bring glory to Him. “Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [greatest] reward. It is the Lord Christ whom you [actually] serve.” COLOSSIANS 3:23-24 AMP #TGBTG, Tom O’Keefe Next Blog: Joy in Suffering |
